Accessibility is not an afterthought
At Mindsmith, accessibility is woven into every decision we make. We've focused our WCAG 2.2 AA compliance efforts on the learner experience — the courses, interactions, and content your audience engages with.
We continuously audit the learner-facing experience against WCAG 2.2 AA guidelines and work with users who rely on assistive technologies to identify and address barriers.
While the authoring experience is not yet WCAG 2.2 AA compliant, improving its accessibility is an active priority on our roadmap.
What WCAG AA means
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA is the internationally recognized standard for digital accessibility. Meeting this standard means:
- Content is perceivable by all users
- Interface is operable via multiple input methods
- Information is understandable and predictable
- Content works with assistive technologies
Learner Experience Accessibility
Built for every learner
The learner-facing experience in Mindsmith includes comprehensive accessibility features, ensuring courses are usable by people of all abilities.
Full Keyboard Navigation
Learners can navigate courses using only a keyboard, ensuring users who cannot use a mouse can fully engage with content.
Screen Reader Compatible
The learner experience works with popular screen readers including NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver, with proper ARIA labels throughout.
High Contrast Support
Text and UI elements maintain sufficient color contrast ratios, and we support high contrast mode for users with low vision.
Focus Indicators
Clear, visible focus states help users track their position when navigating with keyboards or assistive technologies.
Semantic Structure
Proper heading hierarchy and semantic HTML ensure content is logically organized and easily navigable.
Media Alternatives
Support for captions, transcripts, and alt text ensures multimedia content is accessible to all learners.
WCAG 2.2 AA
The four principles of accessibility
Our platform is designed around the four core principles that define accessible digital experiences.
Perceivable
Information and user interface components are presented in ways that all users can perceive, regardless of sensory abilities.
- Text alternatives for non-text content
- Captions and alternatives for multimedia
- Content adaptable to different presentations
- Sufficient color contrast (4.5:1 minimum)
Operable
User interface components and navigation are operable by everyone, including those using assistive technologies.
- All functionality available via keyboard
- Sufficient time to read and interact
- No content that causes seizures
- Clear navigation and wayfinding
Understandable
Information and operation of the user interface is clear and predictable for all users.
- Readable and understandable text
- Predictable navigation and functionality
- Input assistance and error prevention
- Consistent identification of elements
Robust
Content is robust enough to be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents and assistive technologies.
- Compatible with current and future tools
- Valid, well-formed markup
- Proper name, role, and value for UI components
- Status messages accessible to screen readers

Testing & Compliance
How we ensure compliance
Automated Testing
We use industry-leading automated tools to continuously scan our platform for accessibility issues, catching problems early in development.
Manual Audits
Regular manual audits by accessibility experts verify that our platform meets WCAG 2.2 AA standards and provides a quality experience.
User Testing
We work with users who rely on assistive technologies to test real-world scenarios and identify barriers that automated tools might miss.
Continuous Improvement
Accessibility is an ongoing commitment. We regularly review and improve our platform based on new guidelines, user feedback, and evolving best practices.
Shared Responsibility
Accessibility is a shared effort
Accessibility is a shared responsibility between Mindsmith and the content creators who use our platform. We strive to be a platform that helps you be accessible by default — from semantic HTML output to built-in contrast checks and screen reader support.
Mindsmith provides tools, defaults, and guidance that support accessibility out of the box. However, certain user-created themes, custom color choices, or content decisions may not meet accessibility standards.
We encourage all creators to review their content for accessibility and take advantage of the built-in tools Mindsmith provides to ensure every learner can engage with your courses.
